Kurt Cobain's Childhood Home in Washington Set to Open for Tours

Cobain lived in the one-and-a-half-story house in Aberdeen from 1968 to 1984. Kurt Cobain’s childhood home in Washington state has been unanimously approved by the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation to be turned into a landmark. In the past, cities have not always been diligent in protecting the locations that helped build their musical heritage. The owners should have known that people are gonna want to snap pics and stuff so honestly I would recommend having the house as a open house. Because there are no organized Nirvana tours, I created my own, using “Heavier Than Heaven,” Charles Cross’s masterful Cobain biography, to create an itinerary that I hoped would give me a better understanding of Cobain and his music.

What Happened To Kurt Cobain's Seattle House?

John Lennon’s long-lost Framus Hootenanny acoustic guitar has been found – and it’s set to go under the hammer next month for what could potentially be a world record-smashing auction. If you’re not enjoying your life, then something’s got to change. We’re only here for a very short amount of time, and you are not put here to have a shitty sucky life. Well, just because I started a business with a goal of raising money for a nonprofit, doesn’t mean that I think that social-justice capitalism is sustainable. That’s not where I see the future of activism going, because if we keep filling in financially as citizens, GoFundMe and stuff like that, for things that our taxes should be going for, instead of, let’s say, genocide. I think we need to find a solution to this two-party system, I think we need to radically change everything.

You write in the book about doing photography and screen printing in college. What do you think visual art allows you to express that music doesn’t? If I had the answer to that, I wouldn’t have to make visual art anymore. That’s what I will be doing in my hotel on tour to relax, is taking beautiful stuff I find on the internet, or pictures I take, and goofing around with them on Photoshop.

Before anyone knew where he was or what was about to happen, Cobain had already barricaded himself in the greenhouse above his garage. The price has since fallen in great occasional tumbles, like Halloween candy that’s survived into spring. In early October, the listing dipped to $225,000, less than half of the original price. It will be opened to the public for small private tours early next year “on special days, events or happenings by special request”. Zoning regulations, however, mean it currently cannot operate as a full-time museum.

The band’s breakthrough album, “Nevermind,” propelled them to⁣ superstardom and put Seattle at the forefront of the grunge movement. Cobain’s introspective lyrics and powerful performances resonated with fans around the world, solidifying his status as a musical icon. Courtney Love had the garage and greenhouse demolished before selling the house for $2.9 million in 1997 to Seattle businessman Euyang Walter Jr.

But during the book writing process, if I had one or two Kathleen clones to just decompress with, and be like, “Oh, do you think it’s O.K., we’re sharing this story? You play a show, and there’s some weird thing that happens, and you all get to talk about it afterwards. How much were you going back to your old friends and talking through these memories? Kurt Cobain (February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994) was the founder and frontman of the highly popular 90s grunge band Nirvana, before purportedly ending his own life. He was known for his cryptic lyrics, distinctive voice and guitar sound, dark visuals, and angsty, cynical view of the world and his fame. Little information has been released about the house in the years since, though the deed to it has passed between several new owners since Courtney Love decided to sell it in 1997, per King County records. The house was also renovated in 1999, with the owner investing $250,000 in the property to develop a new garage and retaining wall. An electrician found the body at Kurt Cobain’s house in a greenhouse above the detached garage. The coroner’s report deemed Kurt Cobain’s death a suicide by gunshot.

A lot of them [are] more relevant now than they were back then, which was horrifying. But also, I found things in the songs that I didn’t know were there, that I could focus in, at my age, that I really related to now, that wasn’t maybe the main part of the song to me. There might’ve been half a verse that became very important to me that wasn’t as important to me in my twenties, if that makes sense.

She lived there until 1997, when she sold the house that Cobain had initially bought for $1,485,000, per King County records. Despite the house's tragic history — or perhaps because of it — the value of the house roughly doubled in the space of three years, to $2,895,000. Kurt Cobain’s suicide note from that attempt stated that he would “rather die than go through another divorce,” referring to both his childhood and current marital struggles. Cobain ultimately returned to Seattle, where his wife, relatives, and bandmates staged an intervention on March 25, spurring him to leave and stay with acquainted drug dealers.

I was at this transitional point in my life — it was before Bikini Kill and Le Tigre started playing again — and I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do next. I felt like I had to just write everything down that had happened, for myself, so I could move on. I really needed to do that in my life, to make it into the next step. I needed to leave the Nineties behind, and I was finally ready to grapple with a lot of the punk purity stuff that happened back then.

You write in the book about your friendship with Kurt Cobain, and how hard to lose him, but also to see it become a national story. How has it been for you to see Nirvana continue to be such a cultural force, even 30 years later? You cannot walk three feet in any country, any city, without seeing a Nirvana shirt.
